Heh, hated the stuff, wouldn’t drink it for many years. Then I got a job at a coffee shop, not a Starbucks but it was such that if we made a bit of extra money we could vary up the coffee we purchased. At the time, I wouldn’t drink it without a 2:1 ratio of cream and sugar, and could not fathom how anyone could drink it black or black with sugar. As a coffee drinker, I don’t like the taste at all, only do it for the caffeine kick. If I order a coffee I always get an espresso, people think I’m a coffee pro but really it’s just less disgusting liquid for the same amount of caffeine.

Pulling a perfect shot and tasting no bitterness or astringency is such a different experience. You can get anything from really toasty chocolate flavors to acidic bright fruit flavors. If you have the patience for it, it’s so rewarding to brew good coffee yourself. I occasionally go to my local coffee shops and Starbucks in a pinch, but the money I invested in equipment generally guilts me into brewing from home especially nowadays. Then again, you can just not like coffee nor care to try to like it.

Once there you get to appreciate the literally stunning array of flavors: fruits, herbs, earthy, woody. Warning I’m an unapologetic coffee snob. Whatever you do, if you truly want to learn coffee, never add milk, cream, or sugar. If you do you are just masking aspects of coffee you don’t like. I’m the exact same way OP, and here’s my advice: try it affogato (over ice cream). I can’t explain why it changes the flavor so much, because no amount of sweetener added to a cup of coffee or a shot of espresso makes it palatable for me, but for some reason, it’s fucking delicious over ice cream. you’ve honestly just had shit coffee. It’s not all the same just as not all cars are the same. You can’t drive a lawnmower and say all vehicles are slow.

Coffee can taste soooo good, but making good coffee is such a pain in the ass. Once you’ve found your preferred brewing method and ratios, a good cup of coffee can still take so much work. I went from “pour over” with no measurements using a grocery store plastic pour-over cone and a blade grinder to a modest manual espresso set up with an entry level electric conical burr grinder and a v60 routine for regular coffee. With everything going on in the world, I really got into coffee and have a lot of fun with it.

Part of the coffee experience is the smell. Even a coffee lover won’t enjoy coffee if they pinch their nose while drinking. You don’t have to like coffee. It’s okay. This sub doesn’t need to degenerate into an unwinnable debate about subjective personal taste. I swear it’s more of an abusive relationship rather than thinking that it tastes good. I hate coffee’s flavor, but when I go without coffee for a day, I miss its acidic and bitter taste

It’s definitely an acquired taste for most people, I hated coffee but drank it for the caffeine boost many years ago. Now, give me a shot of espresso and I’ll judge that thing like I’m a coffee nazi! I love the taste of straight espresso providing its made correctly, pour times are perfect on the machine and the beans are of good quality.

I’m actually a coffee nerd with a low caffeine tolerance, so I’m often on the hunt for quality decaf (there is such a thing, it’s just harder to find), and I’m firmly into the American camp of liking coffee and milk drinks because the milk alters what parts of the coffee are accentuated. But my sugar needs are relatively low beyond keeping the caffeine from crashing my blood sugar when the coffee is to my tastes.

I always drink coffee black, and I can genuinely say I like the taste. I prefer light roasts to dark roasts, and as long as it isn’t literally vacuum-sealed grounds, the quality is not super important…..but higher quality coffee usually does taste noticeably better.  I use instant coffee and milk/creamer, little to no sugar. The fattier the diary, the less bitterness I taste.

Higher fat dairy is also a good way to soften bitterness, low fat dairy just doesn’t interact the same way and requires more sugar to balance the bitterness. Also, brewing coffee with a small pinch of salt or with cinnamon helps to soften or prevent bitterness, just mix it with the grounds.No judgment from this coffee nerd (I’m just as big a fan of tea), but it sounds like you’re operating from limited experience with likely crappy coffee.

A relatively inexpensive way to try higher quality coffee is to buy whole bean and grind your own, or find a local roaster that brews their coffee a few different ways. The local roasters often have baristas that are better versed in coffee and all the different ways origin, roast, brew style, and preparation effects coffee. It’s not a singular experience at all levels.

You also have a common issue where people will over-extract their coffee, usually because they’re not using enough grounds for the amount of water (2 tablespoons per 6 oz water for drip coffee) or too fine a grind for their extraction method. Or their coffee is stale because it’s poorly stored. Overextraction and staleness increase bitterness and kill the sweeter or more complex notes in the coffee.

Cocoa and vanilla are pretty gross until you add things to them. Even then there are some people who prefer bitter dark chocolate. I’m a coffee lover, worked in a café for years even, all my coworkers loved black coffee with no sugar, I’m still happiest with a cappuccino. Actually just recently started liking the taste of the coffee. There’s such a big difference between whatever percolator coffee your parents make and a freshly ground pot of nice coffee.

I think OP took it a little too far with a push of his/her particular preconceptions. That said, the premise isn’t off-base. I love the taste of coffee while agreeing it smells a lot better than it tastes. I believe chocolate and only a few other foods have aroma and flavor profiles that are nearly identical. While we’re at it…I also love the smell of gasoline, though have never tasted it to verify how it tastes on a relative basis.

I used to not like coffee. After drinking it with sugar/creamer it got better. I then stopped with the additives and drink straight black. Now I’ve moved on from the box store brands and pay a little more from a local fella who sells beans from Guatemala, Ethiopia, Kenya, etc and I’ll never go back. Maybe it’s an acquired taste like beer or whiskey. Or maybe it comes with age. Just my .02 cents that weren’t asked for. Good day.

We buy a super expensive coffee at home and it is nasty. SO loves it but i can’t even smell it. I can only drink it if I doctor it to ice cream levels of milk/sugar so I stopped drinking coffee at home completely. Pandemic has meant no coffee at all. I don’t even think it smells good, sure as shit it tastes horrible. I force myself to drink it for the caffeine, and I’ll be honest I’m not even sure that caffeine even does anything for me.

I’m convinced half the liquids people to drink they don’t actually enjoy, they just like how it makes them feel like adults, the same reason some teens get into smoking. You have to actively try to like this stuff before it’ll start tasting even a little bit good, but it’s traditionally seen as mature/manly/cool so people try until they can bear it enough to say they enjoy it.

Funny you should post this. My husband and I talked about this just last night. We’re both coffee drinkers (me more so than him) and we both agree that coffee smells way different than it tastes. Coffee is an acquired taste, but the scent is almost universally loved. As far as the aroma … the aroma is very likely enhanced, especially for the ‘fancy’ coffees.

I thought coffee was bitter until I moved to Seattle and started tasting and brewing my own, the flavors you can get are incredible. Drinking poorly brewed, bulk coffee, that’s sat on shelves for months, and saying all coffee is bad is like judging all beer based on natty light. I’ll admit that finding a good cup of coffee is difficult and that most coffee shops make terrible coffee.

My personal favorite is Starbucks’ iced coffee and cold brew, but only so long as they’re unsweetened, and no milk (as I’m severely allergic to dairy). People always shit on Starbucks, and while I agree that their hot brews are terrible, the cold stuff is great (provided there’s no sweetener).
