Cocoa and vanilla are pretty gross until you add things to them. Even then there are some people who prefer bitter dark chocolate. I’m a coffee lover, worked in a café for years even, all my coworkers loved black coffee with no sugar, I’m still happiest with a cappuccino. Actually just recently started liking the taste of the coffee. There’s such a big difference between whatever percolator coffee your parents make and a freshly ground pot of nice coffee.

I think OP took it a little too far with a push of his/her particular preconceptions. That said, the premise isn’t off-base. I love the taste of coffee while agreeing it smells a lot better than it tastes. I believe chocolate and only a few other foods have aroma and flavor profiles that are nearly identical. While we’re at it…I also love the smell of gasoline, though have never tasted it to verify how it tastes on a relative basis.
