For my family, we don’t have Santa presents. We told our kids that some people believe in Santa just like some people believe in God. Of course, it’s easier to explain when they’re older. When they were little, I would decorate with Santa sometimes but they just kind of thought of Santa like just another snowman. Like skeletons and pumpkins at Halloween. The way we did Christmas is that you get gifts from Santa for being good, but give and receive gifts from loved ones. Presents from my parents were half from Santa, and half from them. All relatives’ gifts would be from them, we did a few things like “oh Santa must have gotten confused because he left a gift here for you” and it was really fun as a kid. I plan to do the same when I have kids.

Well, there are good cynical answers out there— and I’m not entirely sure my take isn’t also one of those— but I think a big part of it comes down to the whole “Nice kids get rewarded” side of the equation. The Santa story provides kids with a barometer of their good behavior with a supernatural element that isn’t tied purely to performative goodness, and that, in theory, leads to the understanding that it’s better to always be good even when you don’t know someone is watching and taking notes about it.

 

 

The scientific method is the best method we’ve come across to describe the physical world of matter but it has nothing to say about the subjective experience when that’s all we have, now notice how depressed individuals have become since we’ve told people that our internal horizon of perception doesn’t matter because it’s not “real”. My mom told me when I was older than the idea of Santa was about selflessness and generosity. It was never a thing to brag about anything in my family. Was brought up with the idea that bragging about anything was rude and ill-mannered. Santa always gifted the toys and fun stuff, parents the necessities. I continued that with my boys, they have grown up to be generous and compassionate men. Now my grandson is being raised by his parents with the same values. I do understand where many are coming from, I can see if bragging is part of your life that it would cause issues.

 

My parents always told me the presents we’re from them, but Santa was the one delivering them. Did it make sense that Santa just came and handed the presents that were already there out? No. Did I ever question it? No. My parents always did like 2-3 Santa gifts that were unwrapped for my brother and me and the rest were clearly labeled as from my parents. It went back and forth on how cool the Santa gifts would be depending on the year, but his stuff was almost never the focus. And when I found out about Santa not being real, my mom wrote me this sweet letter explaining the magic behind Santa and inviting me to be a part of that magic, to be Santa, which was really cool!

Growing up, we always got practical gifts from Santa. Clothes, books, sleds, simple toys. If we were lucky enough to get something big and expensive. That was always from our parents, never from Santa for this exact reason. We shouldn’t be getting better gifts from Santa than those less fortunate Well if we’re being completely honest, Capitalism/Consumerism has taken over most holidays (inclusive of Christmas), and from a marketing perspective, saying your “parents love you” doesn’t quite make sales like “mythical being we can put on a coke bottle”.

My dad knew the Santa/elves and had gotten the book ahead of time for them to give to me. Yeah, he could have just been like “Yeah, I’m going to give you what you asked for and help you set up a “lab” in your bedroom.” But he specifically removed himself from the giving and took no credit for it. After I learned the truth about Santa, I was obsessed with doing things like my dad did when I gave gifts to other people, including another family/friends/colleagues. It’s cool to be thanked and acknowledged for something, but I find the holidays to be more fun when that magic and mystery (through selfless giving) makes someone’s day memorable.

Whilst if we tell them the truth then the ” good boy” things shift to “good parents” stuff. It’s not their responsibility anymore to be good or bad. Plus if you gift them a cheap product you have an excuse ready. Lol. It sets them up for the bigger illusion of the God character that is introduced during older adolescence. If you can get your child to believe nonsense when they are young it makes it easier to keep them believing nonsense as they grow up.

The eyes are relaxed and aren’t focusing on something, so, looking at slightly different directions, they make things go double and blurry my language we call it “staring at infinity”. I accidentally did that once while eating and a friend who was sitting across from me said “want an onion ring?”.

This is SO INTERESTING to me!!! So tertiary question—do you enjoy reading? I ask because one of the reasons why I like reading so much is because I picture everything happening in the story so vividly that I almost feel like I’m living it instead of lying in bed or whatever. Like traveling but in my own mind. You can’t do this? I know what a tree looks like, if you asked me to draw one after reading a description I could do it. But I can’t “see” it in my mind.

I can do it, but my optometrist said it wasn’t good for me in particular because my eyes were on the verge of needing stronger prescriptions, and he said this defocusing weakens the eye when I in particular needed to focus on strengthening it. Something to keep in mind for other people, I would do it often when washing dishes, being a car passenger do you know if it’s okay if the eyes defocus themselves, for example when you’re daydreaming? It seems a little frightening as I can defocus them on command, but my brain also naturally does it when I’m zoning out lol.

I was really surprised when I discovered that some people can’t visualize objects in their minds.I get that not everyone can move around inside a visualized 3d space(like imagining yourself walking through a house and “looking around”). But some people can’t even “see” a picture of a tree in their mind when they think of trees. As someone with a totally blind mind’s eye, I was much more surprised when I learned “visualizing” didn’t mean just try and think of as many properties as possible (size, color, simple or complex shape, texture, etc). Seems like wizard stuff to me :p

To me, it is almost like I am imagining a written list. You tell me to think of a ball, so I “write down” the word ball. It has no properties attached to it, it is just a word. You can tell me to add properties like size and color, and I can “wrote down” those too and recite them back, but there is nothing visual or physical. It really does just feel like you are reading a piece of paper that says “There is a blue ball, 10cm diameter in front of you”. No picture. So what happens if you read a description of a tree? Do you just think of the separate components as they’re being described, but you can’t hold the final image in your mind as “tree”?So what happens if you read a description of a tree?

The very fact we need a serious tag is a farse. I’m all for jokes, but I come to Reddit to dredge through the filth and find the rare thought out answers or interesting facts, like someone rambling on about how to correctly dig a hole without doing your back in. We did the Santa thing because there is something about seeing your child light up that makes your heart swell. But Santa never gave the big present. Usually, he did the stocking (socks underwear, maybe a little toy or two) and one gift like a blanket (she loves blankets) or a stuffed animal. The main gift always came from us. We did this for 2 reasons. 1 like you said, why shouldn’t she know that we love her and wanted her to have her heart’s desire? And 2 not everyone has parents in our situation. I think it derives from a compromise with the more strict puritanical idea that parents shouldn’t spoil their children. And yet parents love their children and want to celebrate during the holidays. By introducing an intermediary, a gift-giving entity, a magical frontman, makes it easier to indulge the children. My dad was more strict and my mom was the more loving/giving. So when “Santa” inundated us with tons of presents, all my dad could do was roll his eyes because he couldn’t possibly disillusion children about Santa’s bounty.
