The election in November is our hail mary at this point. We can hope and do everything we can to ensure a fair outcome but there’s not really much else we can do, because you’re not going to win a rebellion against the U.S. government. I didn’t vote due to my age, but I started getting interested in politics in 2016 when all this happened. I turned 17 in November of 2016. I felt pretty alone in supporting Trump. I was in the very tail-end of discontinuing my belief in Christianity at the time, and it felt like all of my friends, my girlfriend at the time, and celebrities/musicians I followed were all so against Trump. Since the latter half of 2017/first half of 2018, my values in social issues and politics have changed completely, and I am extremely left now. Though I was unable to vote and influence the election in any way at the time, I look back at my newfound attention toward politics and pre-mature values as inexcusable, but a sign of growth.

I’ll edit to add a little more: People live in different emotional realities. This is key to understand. We all live in simulations where our brains re-create the outside world inside our heads so that we can interact with it. Literally everything you see, hear, know, etc, is a best-guess that is reconstructed by your neurons from external reality. What that means is that everything is fundamentally emotional. It is constructed by your brain in an embodied neural net hardwired to your emotions.

It’s like a cult–first, you cut people off from anything that might challenge them. Then you only feed them information telling them how righteous they are, how terrible everyone else is, and how they must be eternally vigilant for being under threat. Well, until it happens to you, you can be convinced (by multiple industries that are supported by billions of dollars annually) that the other people deserve it. Sometimes it takes personal experience (either going through it yourself or seeing it happen to someone you’re close to) to break through all the noise around you.
