I grew up Catholic, gradually left the Church starting around age 8. For most of that time, I felt live and let live. I don’t believe the dogma but they aren’t hurting me. That began to change when they became vocal about birth control and abortion because that was definitely directly harming me. It’s now gotten to the point that I will do whatever I can – which ain’t much – to erase that crap from the face of the earth.

While I believe morally that your basic point is correct, it’s well-established in historical discourse that by “all men are created equal”, what the framers meant was that they weren’t going to have a government that discriminated among the different Christian sects that were represented in the polity at that time (Presbyterians, Calvinists, Quakers, etc.). That’s literally the extent of their egalitarianism, but the shitty thing is that for the time that would have been super progressive.

As far as anyone who actually had a “seat at the table”, 100% the only people in their minds were landed white men. They wouldn’t have conceived of anyone else as worth listening to, such was their zeitgeist and worldview. We have a long way to go, obviously, and backsliding is an ever-present danger, but we’ve also come a long way too. Never forget that.

I don’t know. It just always seemed weird to me when people pull out the “Oh do you only consider black people to be 3/5ths of a person?” Because they are referencing something horrible about how we treated black people, but it also seems to fundamentally misunderstand what is problematic about it in the first place. Given the context of the 3/5th compromise, I would hope they count as zero! Until they get to cast their own votes in their own interests, that is certainly what would be best.

Although you have a linguistic point, we can all agree that the 18th and 19th centuries were not exactly known for having an egalitarian consensus on gender topics. I mean, maybe they really meant the word as in all humans but that’s irrelevant. Their actions speak otherwise. The 3/5 compromise isn’t about declaring black people as 3/5 of a human. It’s a compromise about how much control slave owners.

Being considered a “whole person” in this context would have been horrible for black people and is what the south was trying to argue for. The whole point of the 3/5ths compromise was the south argued that slaves should count when determining how many repress titivates those states had in the federal government. Meaning any slave owner gets to increase the amount of control they have over the federal government based on the number of slaves he owns.

The north wanted slave owners to not be able to use their slaves in this way at all. The compromise was letting 3/5ths of the slave population get counted when determining how many representatives each state gets. The ideal there for the anti-slavery movement is to count black people “not as people at all” using that logic because they weren’t actually able to elect people who would fight for their interests, it just meant slave owners now had a lot more power to fight for their own.

Not that you don’t necessarily know all of this, I’m just posting it to bring more thought to the tragic absurdity of the idea. It’s odd how often we distill the Three Fifths Compromise down to “black people only counted as 60% of white people” when in actuality, the fact that they were counted at all was a huge win for their oppressors and a very part of the system that was built to keep them enslaved. It provided more representation to slave-owning states by assigning their delegate count in the House of Representatives

I think it’s interesting how often we miss what the Three Fifth’s Compromise really guaranteed. It provided more representation to slave-owning states by assigning their delegate count in the House of Representatives based on a count of their population of “free Persons” plus three-fifths of their population of “other Persons” which is really just a poor euphemism for “Enslaved Human Beings” since it didn’t count Native Americans who didn’t pay taxes or indentured servants.
