Restaurants who put pictures on their menu generally cater to your well-done eaters, chicken finger having, way past aldente date-night crowd. There’s nothing wrong with that being your business, but anybody who appreciates food on a deeper level jokes about the menu picture thing because, in general, those restaurants serve ordinary/crappy food.

If you’re going to a Chinese restaurant you should have someone who speaks Chinese with you, because otherwise you’re not gonna get the good shit. It’s really important because the waiter is the one who knows what’s fresh (which is what you should be ordering) and they’re not gonna take the time to translate it for you if you’re asking in English.

I once ordered “shrimp with lobster sauce” from my local China wok because of my love of shrimp and lobster but instead of some beautiful stir-fried dish topped with creamy lobster imbued sauce I was met with a huge Tupperware container of soggy shrimp swimming in lobster broth and I STRONGLY agree with your recommendation

Places with pics? Mcdonalds, fast food. But also no-frills medium caliber dinners. I think the thing is that if you are going to an expensive restaurant you don’t trust, pics should be a thing.

Eh, the refineries will still be running and bought up by another company… instead of Valero or shell or Citgo gas stations, you’ll see Amazon gas stations… mostly the price of oil affects drilling rigs which in itself isn’t a bad thing as when the Russians and whoever else is flooding the market finally stop, we’ll just flick the switch and start pumping again. This means we still have more total stock for farther down the road when other countries’ supplies start drying up.

At a minimum pictures of the items (even just drawings) on kids, the menu is really very helpful. Showing my kid a picture of a hamburger or macaroni is easier than asking him to choose based on the name alone, especially places with 10+ items on a kid’s menu. I had photos of common “kid” foods in my camera roll for a very long time just to solve this problem.

I honestly disagree with you. Pictures of the food take away all the fun that comes with not knowing exactly what your food will look like. Also, the chef has less creative freedom, since he will always try to reproduce the picture, and that will impact the taste.

But tbh I usually like to look around and see what other people are eating and if I see something good that’s what I go for. That’s how I tried Pina Loca for the first time, steak chicken and shrimp fajita in a hollow pineapple with artfully carved oranges got taken passed my table and whoo food boner.

If customers are few and I’m in an unfamiliar restaurant I ask someone working there what they would recommend. What’s best is usually what people get most often, and the people working there know what’s up.

I didn’t like menus with photos on them, but then I went to Japan, and now I think they should absolutely be used more. I know no Japanese, and I was so grateful for the restaurants that had menu photos. The friend I was visiting knew some Japanese, so I had her help when we were out and about together, but the menu photos were so so needed when I was out on my own.

I’ve noticed on ubereats, most of my orders are done with those that have pictures. I’m not about to buy some shit you don’t even have the balls to put up a picture for me to hold you to.

The photos are usually very poorly done, and if it’s presenting itself as “fine dining” that’s a big red flag, since if you’re a fine dining restaurant you should be doing seasonal food, and that might mean new menus every few weeks, or every month, with new specials, and it’s extremely complicated to take quality photos of every dish for the turn-over rate required for those menu changes.

If you are cooking with fresh, seasonal produce, creating new menu items based on what the best food at the market was that week, and replacing the whole menu on a regular basis, then it’s simply not practical or affordable to photograph every dish.

In my experience, the menus in Chinese (and other Asian restaurants, for that matter) are only as big as they are because they list every possible combination of entree and two sides. The pho place I go to has something like 90 dinner specials on their menu, but it’s really only 9 or so main dishes listed 10 times. Pork with egg roll and rice. Pork with egg roll and noodles. Pork with egg roll and fried prawns. Pork with rice and noodles. Etcetera etcetera etcetera.

Not necessarily true here. The Chinese restaurant I go to here has a Chinese menu and an English+Norwegian menu. The Norwegian/English menu does American food (stuff like beef in sauce and rice) and is literally an entire book. The Chinese menu is a completely different menu with Chinese food and only two pages long

I know I would 100% trust the pictures on the menu of an updated, modern-looking restaurant with good reviews; because that tells me they keep the place clean, up to date, and have good food. If I walk into a place that looks like a great grandmother’s house, with meh reviews, I’m going to expect that the photos haven’t been updated in quite a few years.

Some things, of course, this is probably fine. Cheeseburger and fries? Sure. But if you’re paying Gorron Ramsey money to eat produce that was picked green and allowed to “ripen” on the boat or truck and a previously frozen chunk of meat, you’re wasting your money.

Yeah if I’m rolling up to a place I know I’m spending 75+ a person on dinner, I don’t want to see some shitty smartphone pictures on the fuckin menu. What I’m expecting is a solid dish no matter what I pick, and then that experience is factored into the cost.

It’s a red flag for places that are tourist traps in cities with lots of tourists, especially in Europe. Having the menu be in multiple languages normally (not always though) can be a good sign you’re in a tourist trap and are about to pay way too much for fairly ordinary food.

As a chef to I can tell you that’s a bad comparison because ppl already expect that. Noone goes to mcd with expectations. Their business model is “cheap, fast, you’re drunk at 1 am and everything is closed”. Only lunatics complain at a franchise with system gastro and no servers.

But when you pay min. 8bucks for a burger and a waiter is stroking your back ppl start to feel a lot more entitled. Especially if you catch too many of the “I want it changed” crowd. The ones who cant make one simple order without adding or removing a lot just cause.
