That’s a poignant observation. The prevailing opinions on Reddit are definitely more progressive/woke/authoritarian-left than the population as a whole. Reddit is a place where these people can flex their influence in a way that would backfire in the real world. Ironically the whole Reddit upvote/downvote system does exactly this so it shouldn’t be particularly surprising that the majority of its users support such a philosophy.

I’d say “free societies” don’t exist in a vacuum; they have fairly liberal cultural backgrounds that allow them to exist without imploding. When you introduce more closed cultures to these societies they seem to take advantage of the freedoms afforded to perpetuate their system. I think this is similar to why we don’t allow completely free speech; people take advantage of free speech to push ideas that are diametrically opposed to the ideas upheld by free societies. Hopefully, my rambling made sense.

This argument has always struck me as misguided. It effectively gives permission to the majority to declare any minority position to be ‘wrong’ or ‘harmful’ and therefore deserving of ‘righteous intolerance’. It gives the authority to determine what is right or wrong to the court of popular opinion. It opens the doors to a kind of mob rule in which any unpopular or uncomfortable opinion is squashed simply for being different.

Ugh, thank you so much. Not Muslim, but I do have a strong belief in not harassing anyone for not sharing my religion. As a German, who worked in schools for some time, I absolutely support this. It’s not about Islam our suppression. From concentration, over social interactions, to making sure a kid has the right to choose its own beliefs. There are many pedagogical reasons why this is a good idea. A kid should be able to grow up free from religious dogmas and believes and just develop his own character as a human being. I say this as someone who is religious myself. Just let kids be kids.

When I was a kid, I wanted to absolutely wear a hijab as soon as possible. Why? Not to please some god, but to please my parents. Kids aren’t remotely capable of making such decisions, especially not with the prospect of eternal hell looming over you should you ever decide to take off the hijab. I know plenty of people who started wearing the hijab at a young age and now do not anymore. On the other hand, a friend of mine put on the hijab only after she finished school and is now extremely happy with it.

I live on a decent sized river, my property line actually extends through to the other side of the river, I build a dam, which creates an awesome fishing hole that I fish basically every day after work in the summer.
