The headache rack also has edges to prevent this from happening, there would still be some boards up there if it was, the paneling would be crushed from the force of it falling, etc. There’s no way that load was ever on the headache rack with the way the ends of the board are inside the tailgate.
Also, if the cargo shifts that badly while you’re driving, you stop immediately because you fucked up securing it. I wrap two 1000lb. rated ratchet straps across the bed before I even load the lumber. When it’s loaded I loop the ratchets back over themselves and crank them down. Good call! Also if you let the straps loop around a little behind the tie-down points, when you crank them down they’ll not only tighten around the lumber they’ll also drag the lumber forward to the front of the bed. Using this method, if I try to move the lumber after it’s tied down, the lumber stays put and the whole truck moves. It’s super secure. I had a guy pass me on the highway the other day with kayaks hanging out of his bed like that. I have no idea how he hadn’t hit another car with them. Luckily my car was low enough to not be hit, but a truck in front of me had to swerve to avoid being hit.
