I was the same age when it came out. I hadn’t heard of the movie when the sci-fi channel doc dropped. It freaked me out. This was way before the reality ghost shows so I never saw anything quite like it. As soon as I heard that they were releasing the movie I knew it was fake, but it had me going for a few days. Eventually saw it with my dad in an empty theater matinee and was pretty disappointed, but it didn’t change my opinion about how creepy the doc was.
My situation was similar, and I was 16 at the time. It was opening weekend at an independent theater. I knew nothing about the film, except that it was supposed to be “found footage”. It’s hard to imagine life before the “mockumentary” style even existed, but it was extremely convincing. At the time, there was no The Office or Modern Family. There weren’t really any movies that had that fake reality handheld camera style.
