I too went to private school and I never questioned a lot of the privilege until much later. I was never very interested in clothes and cars, but things like expensive extracurriculars (riding horses), going on vacation to fancy places, not having (or needing) a job as a teenager, were just normal things you did. If you grow up like that you just kind of set the bar there. The insight that this isn’t a normal lifestyle for many people didn’t come until much later. I’m really into this punishment on a surface level like I found it DELICIOUS, but I don’t really know if this punishment is going to have the effect you intend. It manages to be both extreme and very surface level.

Honestly? Yeah. I was going to make some comment about how there could be some gearheads buying nice cars purely for their own enjoyment, but even then, that enjoyment derives from the exclusive price or from the top-end performance… and therefore the price. The “average” rich person who buys a convertible cause they want to drive with the top down or the zippy little sports car they always wanted? Even if they never ever show it off on purpose, their own internal enjoyment is partially created by the sense of exclusivity or achievement. Those are both tied to the high price of the car, ultimately, because it wouldn’t be exclusive or hard to achieve otherwise.
