Aspiring to own a nice car in and of itself reflects a personal investment in a significant and prevalent signifier of wealth. Maybe you only want to signify that wealth to yourself, maybe you just want to prove you can do it. But it comes back to wealth in the end. You may not have bought these things with the intention to feel superior, but that does not change that this is about the fact that your son very clearly has a superiority complex about your lifestyle. Please examine the ways you may have unintentionally reinforced the very things you attempted to teach him against. And please understand I am not saying that with judgment- I am saying it because even my own parents have unintentionally taught one thing but reinforced the opposite.
