Get it into perspective, NZ didn’t suffer lower rates due to a fantastic government/PM they had lower rates because they’re in the arse end of nowhere and their population is tiny in comparison with most European countries. You are comparing an apple with a pear…PS born and brought up in the UK with family living in NZ and currently living with a Kiwi. Honestly, masks haven’t played a big role in New Zealand’s response. They weren’t endorsed at the beginning due to fear of improper use and risk of people touching their mouth more often
Physically distancing for 6 weeks alongside tracing every single contact was the main driver. Every New Zealander besides the most essential workers stayed home and didn’t break out of their ‘bubble’ household. There was extremely high compliance with this. This ensured cases got low enough that we had the capacity to contact trace every single case and contact tracing has since proved extremely effective at preventing exponential growth.
