There was a video a few months ago where a police officer was recorded planting drugs on a backman and they chased the young lady who filmed him doing it. Nothing came from the footage. Nothing ever will. To be fair, something can only progress to a point if it didn’t start there. The police have never been accountable, thus this is more of a failure to adapt to the changing times. Specifically, the change that many folks now believe the police constantly abuse power to brutalize large segments of the population, often based on race. It’s a damn good thing more cops aren’t that tech-savvy. I doubt it’s super hard to change the filenames and metadata on the videos so that files 0032, 0033, 0034 suddenly become files 0032, 0033, and 0035 when the video gets subpoenaed.

The same body cam logic applies to pretty much all the changes being called for. Body cams would help reduce false claims against cops, but cops still resist them heavily because they know if they are watched, they will be under fire. For example, defunding police would still have cops, though the system would change drastically. More accountability, end of qualified immunity, likely many cop layoffs and them having to reapply for their jobs, etc. However, it would also cut back on cops and reduce their role in society, while funding programs to help us actually deal with the root causes of crime, mass incarceration, and militarized policing.
