Imagine being date raped and having a waiting list like that to even discuss your options with a provider. In a state that requires you to come back at least 24 hours after your first appointment to discuss your options again. Wait, it’s been another 6 weeks wait to get back in and now we have to discuss how you’re going to apply for food stamps and public housing but not if you keep.

Same boat here, although paying it when you go on vacation makes sense to me (although at my daycare, it’s 1/2 price on those days instead of full price). They can’t easily fill the spot for just a week, so the fee keeps the spot saved for your family.

Meanwhile, almost once I week I am hearing from my elderly boomer friends how many months they have to wait for this elective surgery or how many hours they had to wait in the emergency room for an IV, etc. Which totally makes sense because there totally aren’t infuriatingly long waitlists for every single daycare in my area.

Hell, just try to schedule an appointment with basically any specialist. Not a surgery, or screening, procedure, whatever. I had to wait 3 months just get an appointment with an Ear, Nose, & Throat doctor. Then another 6 weeks after that to get an allergy test scheduled.

I specifically ruled out children because I’m working class and there’s no possibility of affording them. Universal childcare would take away at least the financial impossibility. In the province of Quebec where I currently reside, it’s 7$/day. Great service from competent people that have study childcare for 2-3 years post-high school.

The lucky people have grandparents or another family to help out. Everyone I know with kids and with no free babysitters doesn’t have kids until their 40s. Co-workers of mine pay around $1500 a month literally across the bridge in Ottawa. It couldn’t imagine paying either that or the amount you stated.

Then her dad comes in and tries to beat a 14-year-old but still calls him a woman beater? Like dude, aren’t you a kid beater, only beating people who you know you can beat and are underage. And in the realm of kid fighting, a punch to the face is a crazy escalation. At least, it was in my day. I have a cousin who’s a year older than me, he is male and I am female, and we would play around and stuff he was definitely a rough violent kinda kid. not a bad kid, but just, sometimes fights would go too far and we would hurt each other and someone would cry and parents would intervene.

But you don’t punch people in the face. You might shove each other, have a slap fight, throw each other into stuff, etc. but a face punch is pretty serious and not a normal kid-spat kind of thing, IMO. I would be pissed about the uncle’s escalation, too, if I were OP’s parents. One, the fact she would first fight over a controller and two escalate that to a punch to the Face is quite telling of her own upbringing. Punch to the face is learned.

My mother started pressuring me to buy a house and a new truck the very fucking second I turned 20. Still cheaper than a full-time nanny but not by much. However, I cannot minimize the care and education the kids receive – it’s not a center where they are just ‘watched’. They have structured, age-appropriate learning so we are definitely getting what we are paying for but it still hurts to see it as our biggest line item in the budget. Especially since we live in one of the best public school districts but pre-k spots are not equal to the population.

No question my generation will have graduated with the most student debt possible, during a recession that wages haven’t recovered from, in the most expensive time ever to start a family, and I’m totally fine with carrying that burden if it means nobody else ever has to do this in the future.

Just being real- a lot of millennials don’t want to start families or get kids because they will be completely broke and/or too financially vulnerable to raise a kid. It’s not worth it to have a child in this economy and suffer. I can tell you that I am a public school teacher, and my salary right now is okay being by myself- but I could not make it with one kid in the major city I live in.

For me no cause in the military, I already get most services that the taxes pay for. I admit that Quebec could go a little bit more user payer for sone stuff as there is a ton of abuse of the system going on. The whole family on welfare for their whole life even if they are fit to work etc.

50 freaking thousand dollars. That’s the average income. The problem with that figure is that with 5,000 restaurants around the city, you got a LOT of people making way less than that and then others making 6 figures or more on the other end.
