The audience is presented with this gloomy and bleak setting/ atmosphere which typically induces the above users’ expectations of this series. However we are being stumped at every corner when these negative expectations aren’t fulfilled and Harmons environment turns out to be ..ok?

This doesn’t fit together, why use the cinematography of a bleak drama when showing something to be happy about? Because (and that’s my theory) this is how Harmon experiences it. We see the world exclusively through her eyes, the chess board on the ceiling is a hint of that.
