My wife and I basically went to the courthouse, got a certificate, went to an officiant (A lawyer just around the corner), had a quick “Do you … Do you… sickness and health etc,” all 3 of us signed the paper, we went back and turned it in at the courthouse, and it’s been a great 7 months so far.

I’m gonna say any ring will count, but given how materialistic they are as a culture (I don’t want to particularly mean this in a bad way), the fiance and her family probably won’t accept anything less than gold. In Asian cultures, and particularly SEA ones, being able to buy a nice wedding ring and jewelry for your potential.
