I’m American and lived in Brazil for 5-6 months back in 2015. I remember someone telling me, “You know how they say that when you go to another country that you get sick from the food? When I walked down the bread aisle in the grocery store all that I smelled was sugar. Loads and loads of sugar. It was a sickening smell. It smelled sickeningly sweet. It made me remember how diabetes Mellitus got its name. Diabetes being a “large discharge of urine” in Latin and Mellitus meaning “pleasant tasting; like honey.” They used to taste the urine to test for diabetes. You don’t even need to add sugar to bread but there’s a ton of it in there in grocery store bread. Look at the amount sometimes if you’re curious. I try to avoid as much added sugars as possible.
