I’d disagree on the free will part. Yes, what we think and do is very much controlled by upbringing, environment, religion, etc. Yet, I definitely had moments in my life where a choice presented itself either letting something alone with the risk of feeling guilty later or doing something about it putting my mental state at risk. A moment like that is very sobering. I think making a choice at that moment is free will.

You seem to imply accountability isn’t a worthwhile endeavor. I rather think defining accountability is very worthwhile because ultimately we have to make a decision between someone’s freedom and the risk they pose to society. Also, rehabilitation costs society a lot, but then there are loads to be said about throwing people in prisons making it worse for everyone.
