If my mother in law hadn’t had an abortion, my husband wouldn’t exist. It was stuck in one of her tubes right outside her ovary. If it had grown, it would have killed her. And since this happened in the mid-70s, the doctors would have ignored all her complaints. Thank goodness she had a friend in another state that knew a doctor that would perform the operation. It took years and years of suffering for me to get to a place where I was able to address my mental health and start taking steps towards getting my life in order. If I had a child through all of that, I can’t say I would be where I am now with the opportunities I have.

Similar but darker for me. My mom was assaulted as a teen and her family quietly squirreled her away for an abortion. Unfortunately, the guy who attacked my mother never saw justice. Either way, it isn’t certain if my mother would have been able to meet my dad in her 20’s if she had been forced to be a teen mother in the rural south… My reaction is the same. My mom wanted to divorce my dad then she found out she was pregnant with me. Her mom suggested she abort me, which was probably good advice. She didn’t and now I have a life but I wouldn’t have blamed her for doing what was best for herself. I literally couldn’t blame her since I wouldn’t exist. It’s a nonissue.
