On a related note, my grandfather fought against the Japanese in WW2 as a guerrilla. So he was granted veteran benefits like free healthcare at the Veterans’ Hospital in our city. He’d often identify counterfeit veterans since they brag about their time in the war; those who actually were there don’t speak much about it.
That’s what every vet I know says about asking someone what they did in the war. If they say they’re a special forces sniper with 500 confirmed kills, they’re a child who never served, or flew a desk in stateside logistics.
