You’ve picked a really interesting favorite Justice. Arguably the best writer the Court has ever seen, and the last Justice to serve on the Court without a law degree(!). Despite his lack of formal legal education, the legacy of his tenure showed him to be incredibly wise, and sometimes – like in his Korematsu dissent – well ahead of his time. He attended my alma mater, Albany Law School, at the time they offered the ability to test out of your first-year courses and complete a second-year course of study for a certificate of completion.
Damn, I went in suburban Houston so the teachers were primarily more liberal and relaxed about not saying the pledge. All they asked was for us to be respectful of those that chose to recite it which I was fine with. They respected my right to object to it as long as I respected their right to do it. I’m from south Houston and they made up a stand or else we would be sent to our VP just because he would always send us straight to “lunch detention”.
