Both yes and no, in this case, you have an underlying basis for control, aka religion. While the government uses this basis, it is not the sole purpose for the extremist behavior. While this is extreme even by historical standard, it’s not something we haven’t seen before, the easiest parallel to make would be to Nazi Germany. The witch wasn’t even heavily influenced by religion at the time, which could also show how religion bears a minimal role here. Rather than using a strong leader as a gallon figure (which they do, this is Isis) they use an imaginary figure to lead them towards a goal of a strong militant society with the purpose of expansionism.

Also, guys, the Quran is written in a way that is incredibly harsh towards non-believers and anyone who goes against god. I know the bible has passages similar but the verbiage is much more intense Quran. So these governments really don’t have to distort the passages to have their society be this militant. I know a religious text can be interpreted in many ways and I’m not saying all of Islam is like this. But the Quran is crazy AF in a couple of different sections. I’m very agnostic and I hate all religious extremism equally. I’m trying to down play the bigotry/hate that comes out of some Christians.
