They don’t have to. Or if they do they just lie. GOP voters are impressively stupid. Actively voting against their own interests to enrich the already rich and powerful, and being outspoken about being a Trump or GOP supporter. I have no faith left in the US to turn things around for the working people.

This is how Republicans shift the Overton Window. Stake out a position so outrageously unworkable, then “compromise” by pulling the center of the argument rightwards. They’ll remove the means-testing, keep all the rest, then pound the Democrats if they don’t agree by saying they’re playing politics with people’s lives.
