Every ‘social’ issue in this country is the same way. Republicans scream that X is evil or against nature and God is going to punish us for tolerating X, while Democrats are just like “well I have some reservations about X” meanwhile everyone who isn’t running for election is confused why X is worth talking about when people are dying of hunger in the streets.

IMO Christianity is the perfect slave religion, it teaches people being poor is virtuous and that rebellion over inequality is rooted in envy. The modern iteration also teaches wealth is representative of god blessing people.
