Mixing engineer on Netflix content here: we test our mixes on several different systems and optimize each mix for stereo viewing. The volume rocking you’re experiencing is a result of Netflix’s (and other streamers) strict loudness requirements and auto-leveling algorithm. The need to adjust volume bothers us too and hopefully in time, Netflix will come to a less “theatrical” styled mix spec and more of what we’re familiar with, broadcast TV (designed for home viewing) Its a complete joke, they have even crept back to making adverts louder.

I work in TV and our final watch down for episodes was always on a TV with shitty built-in speakers. Often things would jump out that weren’t noticed with the high-quality edit room speakers. It was also annoying when producers would get hung up on some shit that you could ONLY hear on the fancy speakers, but would never be heard by 99.99% of viewers. This is a problem I noticed with a lot of Nolan films. I remember when DKR came out I saw it in theatres on release, Bane was completely inaudible.
