I’m 44 and finally decided to stop masking a few years ago. It has cost me my career, but I give zero fucks at this point. Better to be me than who they expect me to be. I’d rather starve to death than go back to pretending I’m the Amazing Nobody who winds up constantly exhausted and stressed out from it.

I would say it’s common for anyone with a stigmatizing illness. ADHD, depression, autism, chronic fatigue, they’re all invisible problems that garner next-to-no sympathy in a neurotypical society.
