When you’ve got someone questioning whether what they’ve done is impactful enough they keep wanting to dial things up-up-up. Watch a sequence 5x with eardrums blowing out, you become A) numb to it, and it creeps up, B) when you ask people around you if it’s “epic enough” they’re afraid to say anything about overshooting the mark, and C) people are rarely watching the whole movie end-to-end. They’re watching individual sequences, so there’s a little bit of context deafness.

This is one of the reasons I love “The social network” so much. The scene where they are in the nightclub talking (yelling) at each other is a perfect representation of what it would be like talking in a nightclub. And yet I, the viewer, can hear exactly what each character says. I literally feel like I’m sitting in the chair next to them and am a part of their conversation. And especially that this is what the experience of going to see films always is, unless you’re lucky enough to snag a captioning machine that has enough charge to go through to the end.
