After my father’s dad died, I formed a much better relationship with my mother’s father and managed to hear hours of hilarious and heart-wrenching stories from him. Sadly he’s been hit hard with dementia/Alzheimer’s since then, but my favorite story I heard from him is about my grandmother’s side of the family (my grandpa heard this from his brothers-in-law).

Again, this is just a story, but regardless of its level of candor, it’s a great story that I never would have heard if I wouldn’t have taken the time to get to know my grandpa. I guess we had much more in common than I once thought because we both got a kick out of thinking of a whole field of KKK members burning a cross and getting exactly what God intended for them.
