What gets me most about Trump’s defense is the “Anything the president does to get re-elected is OK, as long as he thinks of himself as the best one to lead the country.” I mean, if you really look at that argument…what happens if Trump thinks it’s best for the country that Don Trump gets richer and has a bank heist for personal benefit? What if he orders the Air Force to bomb Democratic-leaning polling stations on election day? What if he learns someone he’s talking to voted for Obama and he shoots them in the face because he thinks it’d be best for the country if there was one less Obama voter around? His defense team’s argument is that evidence doesn’t matter because all Trump has to do is utter the magic words “best for the country” and he gets a free pass.
