He was hurt by a bullet hitting a nearby tree. Which caused a branch to lodge into his leg I believe. He was both disciplined and rewarded for his efforts. But all 5’7” of him just wanted to know the other human was safe. I’m also told that he was responsible for reading. The radar and mapping out where the mines were on the coast. He had to learn to write backward. On a piece of glass for the crew to read for this role. He had many stories about meeting indigenous people over the years in the orient. One particular event. He was also an avid photographer- one of my biggest inspirations. Carrying around a camera nearly everywhere he went, he has deemed ‘the unofficial photographer’ of his platoon. I have countless photographs of HMS ships and crew members that I would love to learn more about one day. His cameras still exist in our family but are packed away from many moves. My dream would be to get them working and try and take some updated photos of the same places using them.
