I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen threads on German subreddits where they are seemingly perplexed by their American and often Indian coworkers who they work with, coming in when they’re clearly sick and needing to be at home, because they just can’t shake the feeling of guilt ingrained in them from years of working back in the US or India, where the freedom to just be sick and get better aren’t afforded to you. I was talking with my doctor about that and how I never want to be prescribed opiates and he said the issue was they were sold a bill of goods on them. Promised they worked great and didn’t cause addiction.

Exactly what happened to me. Started with a valid prescription from the VA. They even had a pamphlet on pain management information that said, and I quote: “opiate pain medication is non habit-forming and therefore may be relied upon indefinitely, though dosages may increase as the patient experiences growing tolerance to the medication” 6 years of legal, legit prescriptions and then cut off, completely and abruptly. So I ended up with a street-level addiction for another 4 years. I’m 18 months sober now but man…it was hell. Literal hell on Earth.
