The “fuck the South, let it burn,” mentality just exacerbates the problems that exist in these rural areas. People are chafing at the burden of a system that is built against them, but politicians are using scapegoats like minorities, immigrants, liberals, intellectuals, and urban populations to turn that rage away from any useful purpose. If we keep fighting, I truly believe we can reconstruct the South and extinguish our heritage of hate, but it’ll take patience, love, and a lot of effort. It’s worse than that. The South is where many of America’s poor and African-Americans live. Northerners who would see the South thrown away are washing their hands of these people, as well. The “fuck the South, let it burn,” mentality just exacerbates the problems that exist in these rural areas.
