The scariest thing is he doesn’t even have to lie about his wrongdoings or try to make them a secret. Almost everyone with a brain could have told you this is exactly what he was doing, and he always ends up letting the cat out of the bag with the crimes he commits, but it doesn’t even matter because his base won’t care and he’s totally immune from any corrective recourse. After the hammering he took from reporters right now, I can guarantee you he’s rushing to advisors to draft a tweetstorm to try to build a defense ahead of the media onslaught incoming. “I knew it was dead but I didn’t know JUST how deadly it was.” “I did what I thought best for Americans!” Etc etc.
For months I argued with conservative friends that Bush was making the link in order to fool people into supporting the war, and they all, to a person, said that no, he wasn’t making that exact link, despite how obvious it was that he was doing so. When a reporter finally cornered Bush and asked “what does the War in Iraq have to do with 911” and he said “nothing,” his numbers plummeted. It’s also like Clinton’s “I did not have sexual relations with that woman,” a technical truth but a lie nonetheless.
