This post resonates with Rainbow Faded Retro Style Shirt me. I came from a science background too and during my time all I saw were people I didn’t want to be. Professors/mentors overworking and stressing out constantly. High competition amongst peers resulting in toxic environment. And finally, the constant fear of someone stealing my work. This was an environment that I couldn’t wait to leave and never looked back.
I hate to think that the world would lose an expert in a scientific field. I bet you would still find joy in your science under different circumstances. I left a postdoc after 6 months because of pay. I liked the PI that I was working with, but I was tired of not seeing the fruits of my labor. I left academics all together and joined industry. This was 18 years ago. I am still with that company, I still publish datasets that clients allow me to release, and have a low pressure adjunct position at a uni in a neighboring town. I even spent time as an editor of a scientific journal. I hope you can find something else you love and can contribute to our beautiful world.
I find that a background in science is helpful in many fields, you just sometimes need to explain how to employers. I have a masters in biology, I now work in homelessness services. I’m not rich and the job isn’t easy, but the pivot to a totally new field wasn’t very daunting – especially if you can leverage any sort of data or project management experience.
