I took a class in college that had a segment on beekeeping. Our professor told us that pumping the beehive full of smoke makes the bees hungry so they go back into the hive to eat the honey, and since they are distracted by doing that, they are less likely to sting you
Based on what I have read, it’s not that it makes them hungry. It makes them think there is a fire and the hive is in danger. So they start eating as much of the honey as possible to be able to regurgitate it if they have to build a new hive.
