While it is true that Iran has on occasion acted to shelter/ or otherwise aid AQ operatives, saying that Iran is now one of their top backers is just absurd. The Iraqi conflict since 2003 is more or less a clash between AQ and AQ inspired groups and Iran and Iranian-backed Shia communities. AQ and similar groups they inspired literally consider Iran to be on the same level of evil or in some cases.
