Obviously, we need to reuse plastic containers ourselves. Government is reticent about legislating the behavior of big business. We need considerable efforts made to create a use for ‘recycled’ plastic. I’m no scientist, but let’s brainstorm where possible uses are: Roadbases, sidewalks, landscape material, building material, fill, soil stabilization… There are countless possible uses, but it has to be profitable or the research and development will end right here. This is where the government can provide incentives to companies willing to do the r&d and preliminary use. The “recyclable” waste from the packaging filled my entire 95gallon recycling bin, even with breaking down boxes. Overpackaging needs to end. Cheap, biodegradable alternatives exist, they’re just not as visibly appealing.

When comparing countries such as the US to Sweden or Switzerland it is quite frightening in a way how much plastic is just thrown away onto a landfill and not taken care of. Sweden currently recycles or composts 50% of recyclable materials. The other 50% is burned for heating or electricity. In comparison, the US recycles 35% of all recyclable materials and burns around 12% with the rest ending up in a landfill. Though having said that there are definitely worse offenders than the US when it comes to recycling. Some examples of countries that are worse at recycling than the US are Poland, Slovakia, and Greece.
