I love the smell and taste equally. I started drinking it daily back in college and haven’t looked back. I like everything from black coffee to the damned pumpkin spiced latte (though that’s more dessert than coffee) and everything in between. My go-to is just regular coffee with a bit of half and a half and no sugar, but I drink it black often as well. I have on rare occasions managed to make a cup with the perfect blend of milk, coffee strength, and sugar to taste as it smells.
I do think it’s an acquired taste, similar to beer. However, you don’t need expensive coffee to get good coffee. It just takes some experimenting. I prefer light roast because it’s much less bitter, beyond that the biggest factors are the freshness (grind right before brewing) and making sure it’s brewed at the right temperature (~195F). You can get good coffee from a regular drip machine and cheap grinder if you get fresh beans in a roast you prefer.
