The Repuplican party has in recent years weaponized market segmentation down to an art form. You don’t need to plead to the majority, just a cheaper, smaller but pinpoint accurate marketing puch to a narrow but empassionate group that you can pitch to and who will agree with what you are selling.

In fairness Obama did the same. You may not like it but it is true. Also, the USA is not the only one that does this, India, Russia, China, hell, even in the UK, and others do this. Facebook, among other apps/services was and are instrumental for this to be done.
