I’m 40 and starting to fix all my mental issues with what I’ve always had. My dad was mostly out of the picture working long hours and almost every Saturday. After he retired I’m starting to notice he is trying a bit to give to his grandchildren what he wasn’t able to give us. I think recently, over the last year or two he is starting to mend the non-relationship we had with him.

Could it be about a role model? If a good caring father is a significant attention-grabber in a child’s life, they will copy these behaviors. They will also feel joy from being cared for and intellectually stimulated by their fathers which fatherless kid would not feel. And they will not associate these warm feelings with something good.
