I will get downvoted for this but I actually read the damn article so I have to say it. As a Canadian, I am so grateful for the government’s timely and drastic measures. I’m in the small minority that wasn’t affected by this financially as I already worked from home full time. I do not qualify for anything, but my fellow Canadians deserve every cent! I wouldn’t really attribute this as faith in our government per se, but being able to compare our government’s action and reaction with other nations like the US and the UK, and seeing the situations evolve in other countries has definitely given us a boost in morale, I think. Like, as long as we’re not doing as bad as “that” guy, we’re good.Absolutely. But you can’t expect the millions who happily voted in their doom to realize that. They’ll just see our clean air and water, our functional hospitals and social net, and they’ll want it, so they think they have the right to take it. It’s the fundamental common perspective that ties Trump voters together: “I want it, so I deserve it, and if I don’t have it, it’s your fault, not mine.”

I live in a small town in between Vancouver and Whistler. The town is the quietest I’ve ever seen. Everyone is staying home, Walmart has put up tape to mark social distancing in the isles. People helping out their neighbors and elderly. My neighbors have put up encouraging messages in their windows. The likelihood we get cases in town is pretty low if people continue to do what they’re doing, but it’s incredible how fast the town started to act way before it was mandatory. As much as I have faith in my government to do the right thing, the people are still being dumb as shit. People are not practicing social distancing, people are not being safe about gatherings, and people are absolutely fucking everywhere still and that’s really worrying to me.

Here in Ontario, just about every business was deemed essential the other day, and now we have 75% wage subsidies for businesses federally. These are policies that keep people going to work, not isolating at home. Although I will say that Premier Legault and Health Minister (I don’t know if it’s the proper term, I’m not English) Horatio Arruda is doing an awesome job in Québec. They’ve shut down quite quickly everything and I think Montreal and Québec (the city) are going in confinement mode very soon.

I was obsessed by the initial trailer for Stalker when it first came out (which felt like more of a tech demo) – a lot didn’t make it into the final game, such vehicles, but it was such a tech leap (along with Doom 3 and Half-life 2) that it was so exciting to see the possibilities of what could be done with lighting and physics. Man I remember playing the original beta as a kid, that shit was SO DIFFERENT from what the first game actually eventually came to be, but damn I hope that they go back and look at the beta and take inspiration from it a bit more for this sequel.

I can’t think of a technical reason for it not feeling the same – there’s not really anything XRay doesn’t that couldn’t be replicated in the newer engine, and IMO, the jank never added anything to the game’s experience. There were some funny moments with bugs (“you see, Ivan…”), but that really isn’t what makes STALKER in my mind. The atmosphere and gameplay are the important part, and from what I can see? They’ve got the first part very right; let’s just see if they can do the second. People seem to confuse the charming quirkiness of Eurojank with actual advantages over other engines. It’s fun to look at those quirks and it certainly sets those games apart, often feeling like they can accomplish more than the ‘streamlined’ engines, but realistically a better engine would only enhance games like STALKER. If your game’s personality comes largely from its jank and unreliability, it hasn’t got much personality to begin with- I think STALKER has plenty to offer outside of that, and in theory, not much will be lost in translation to a new engine

I wonder how much of the charm of the old Stalker games will be retained in this or if the larger focus on it being an important third party game for a broader audience will make it more streamlined for mainstream appeal. Metro was great, but it never quite scratched the same itch as Stalker. There’s something incredibly alluring about the mix of history and myth around Chernobyl that can’t be replicated by a more generic post-apocalyptic setting. Obviously, the exclusion zone is nothing like what’s in the Stalker games, but it does exist, and it is literally post-apocalyptic. And knowing that while playing just makes the fantasy of the game so much more convincing.
