I think the show looks great and has some really interesting sci-fi concepts (Spore drive, Saru’s species). I like a lot of the new characters and think they did a good job in the recasting of some of the old ones. And when the show clicks it does so quite well.

I’ve been a fan ever since I was 5 years old, about 25 years ago (my dad is a Trekkie). I really enjoy the show. Does it have flaws? Of course, but so do all the other series and movies. Does that mean I cannot enjoy it? No way.

I’m pretty positive on it overall, but it’s definitely uneven. This a classically Trek problem though – the first 1-2 seasons of a new show always takes some time to find what works and what doesn’t.

I’m looking forward to season 3 – especially now that they’ve set things up in a way that seems like an interesting arc, and also isn’t hemmed in by the constraints of a prequel. One of my favorite things about Picard is that it’s permitted to advance the state of the universe in a way that a prequel just cannot.

Yeah, I agree with you, and as someone who’s a favorite episode of TNG was Measure of a Man, this show really hasn’t grabbed me. I watch Star Trek primarily for the ethics and morality centric stories. Discovery is the weakest of all the Treks in that department, so it really is my least favorite.

I’m a hardcore Trekkie and I really enjoy it. It has its oddities (the spinning section of the hull, the mushroom highway, the dolphin Klingons, the obnoxious lens flare), but every series of Trek has its peculiarities. Threshold, anyone.

During the Discovery pilot, I couldn’t help but have the reaction of “it really feels like they tasked some intern who’s never watched Trek with making a checklist of fanservice points they need to hit”.

Amen to everything you wrote! I might add that it seemed to me that visual effects and style generally seemed to be more important than substance. A fast-paced CGI extravaganza for a newer generation of track fans and catered to people with shorter attention span.

People didn’t sob for 15 minutes when, one of the most iconic fictional characters ever, died. Kirk’s voice breaking for a moment during Spock’s eulogy (“he was the most….human”) has more emotional impact than all the sobbing.

I don’t mean to upset anyone around here, but I think it’s the dumbest Trek ever made. From the “I like science!” to “this is the power of math”, it feels like someone attempted to merge Star Trek with a Fast and Furious-Esque pacing and writing quality.

It’s disappointing because there aren’t many shows that deliberately dial down the drama; Star Trek was one of the few shows I could watch and not be bombarded by a deluge of played up emotions. I feel like it’s something pretty unique in terms of style that’s been lost.

Also, this is the scene where they take Saru, who looked like he would have a fascinating character arc of figuring out how to become a captain in spite of his crippling fear and make him violent, reckless, and unprofessional. Is this what TPTB think is the right stuff.

I much prefer the old trek where the interpersonal drama was kept to a minimum. I realize that’s my personal taste and not everyone will share it, but nuTrek is way too much melodrama for me. I don’t identify with it and it actually kind of stresses me out.

That notwithstanding, the Starfleet ethos, exists after the fact. If you pull up the writer’s guide for both of the series, Starfleet is barely mentioned. It has since been chalked up to be the Space UN and the “ethos” argument is largely based upon the idea that the organization is somehow infallible.

Starting with the Pahvo episodes, I think that Discovery has had the Star Trek ethos most of the time (but not all of the time). To me, it was Picard that was lacking the Star Trek ethos most of the time.

It’s all fate and faith and stuff that works best in a Space Opera, not a Science Fiction show. I like my Sci-Fi to ask questions about the underlying modes that form the world around us and how we as intelligent creatures react to them.

This is abjectly wrong prima facie. A lot of what Star Trek is actually known for is the work of the other Gene who worked on the show, Gene L. Coon, I’ll skip the canonical list of his contributions to cut to what’s important.

I remember people said the same thing about DS9. I agree Discovery has a different tone. It’s a departure of sorts; I’m with you there. I just don’t think it’s all that bad. e.g. Pike’s contributions seemed to be pure Starfleet to me.

The Klingon war in S1 and the entire mess of nonsensical loose threads that was the “Red Angel” in S2 exist purely for drama and conflict. There’s nothing heady going on there. There isn’t a deeper interrogation of humanism and ideals.

To each their own, but I found season 2 to be a sad boring mess of ideas that mostly missed. The only real highlight to season 2 for me was Tig Notaro playing Tig Notaro as a future engineer.

I really hope they find writers that stop stuffing awful monologues into Burnham’s mouth. I feel like that woman can actually act; she has her moments, but the script fights her every step of the way and makes her say stupid, stupid things..
