Yup. I’m finding that men are constantly judged for their interests even if it’s a supposedly “manly” one. So many people I know just love to bring them down. I have 3 younger brothers, two of them very young adults and I’m starting to see how it affects them and it breaks my heart. Nobody should feel embarrassed over harmless interests. The mindless assumption that sports cars = small dicks will never die because mindless assumptions are easier than actually thinking.

As a newly formed wealth-building adult that has bought stocks and saved for properties, I see nothing wrong with retiring early. I’m 25 and I’m already ready for retirement. I think people need to stop judging others for their interests (unless their “interest” is something appalling). I am not that into sports, but I REALLY love playing Fantasy Football with my friends. We have had the same league and people in it for 11 years. As someone who often makes “midlife crisis” comments, thank for you opening my eyes and making me realize my own closed-mindedness. We both went to private schools so nobody ever really faces repercussions (especially the richer kids whose parents ‘donate’ a lot to the school). Unless you assault a teacher they only suspend people. Anyway, once word got out everyone nicknamed him “Temper Tantrum Trevor” or something along those lines. This is said all the time, but it’s worth repeating. If you are ever in a situation where you need someone to do something, do not do what this teacher did. Do not say “somebody goes to the office.” Pick someone out and say “you go to the office.” People in social psychology call this “diffusion of responsibility,” people are less likely to do something if other people are around. This also works the other way, if you hear someone say “somebody help,” be the person that understands this phenomenon and go and help.

As I teacher I can concur. I had something very similar happen in my classroom when a student (who was 6 inches taller than me and outweighed me by 50lbs at least) started destroying the classroom, throwing things and threatening me. He ripped pictures off from walls and punched a student who tried to help me. Cracked the smart board that I had to beg the district for. A police officer came into the room and tased him. He was taken away. I then had to sit in a meeting with my administration and his parents and a Union rep and explain why I was unable to control him and how it was my lesson planning that didn’t engage him enough and what can I do in the future to keep students interested so they don’t go on a rampage, and how my disciplinary skills are lacking and how that took from the education of all the students in the room. Then they all waited for me to tell them how I would do better as a teacher to entertain my students.

I don’t know. I feel like every person I have ever had the chance to speak with longer than a few minutes has had something interesting to say, and has a degree of complexity that sometimes even surprises me. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the concept, but this seems like reducing a whole complex person into something small and unimportant, and I’m not sure I like it. I’d rather focus on the potential each person has.
