In my mind, it’s like each illness has a checklist of symptoms and you have to hit a certain amount of boxes to be considered to have it. This is not an unpopular opinion. Unless your getting fresh coffee (expense isn’t usually the issue with taste to smell disparity, it’s freshness) prepared well (sorry you eyeballing some spoons of coffee that’s being tossed into your dirty $10 Mr coffee isn’t ever going to turn out perfect) it’s going to smell more “like coffee” then taste.

I honestly love the taste of coffee nowadays, and what people tell you is right; an expensive coffee, from the right roaster and right machine, tastes amazing. It’s possible to have a filter coffee that is sweet and sour, has flavor notes of strawberry, red berries, etc. but for 250 grams of beans that would cost you about But yeah, if it ain’t for you it ain’t and that’s understandable.

think it’s weird that coffee isn’t called something else when cream and sugar is added; its an entirely different drink by almost any definition. Its the exact opposite flavor, the color changed, the smell changed, its even a different viscosity unless its a watered down creamer; its delicious but its like saying you enjoy drinking milk but you only have it in the form of milkshakes.

When coffee gets overheated it gets progressively more bitter it can also get bitter if it’s stale or over-brewed same goes for most teas btw.

At the time, I wouldn’t drink it without a 2:1 ratio of cream and sugar, and could not fathom how anyone could drink it black or black with sugar. As a coffee drinker, I don’t like the taste at all, only do it for the caffeine kick. Pulling a perfect shot and tasting no bitterness or astringency is such a different experience. You can get anything from really toasty chocolate flavors to acidic bright fruit flavors. If you have the patience for it, it’s so rewarding to brew good coffee yourself. I occasionally go to my local coffee shops and Starbucks in a pinch, but the money I invested in equipment generally guilts me into brewing from home especially nowadays. Then again, you can just not like coffee nor care to try to like it.

I’m the exact same way OP, and here’s my advice: try it affogato (over ice cream). I can’t explain why it changes the flavor so much, because no amount of sweetener added to a cup of coffee or a shot of espresso makes it palatable for me, but for some reason, it’s fucking delicious over ice cream. you’ve honestly just had shit coffee. It’s not all the same just as not all cars are the same. You can’t drive a lawnmower and say all vehicles are slow.

Coffee can taste soooo good, but making good coffee is such a pain in the ass. Once you’ve found your preferred brewing method and ratios, a good cup of coffee can still take so much work. I went from “pour over” with no measurements using a grocery store plastic pour-over cone and a blade grinder to a modest manual espresso set up with an entry level electric conical burr grinder and a v60 routine for regular coffee. With everything going on in the world, I really got into coffee and have a lot of fun with it.

Part of the coffee experience is the smell. Even a coffee lover won’t enjoy coffee if they pinch their nose while drinking. You don’t have to like coffee. It’s okay. This sub doesn’t need to degenerate into an unwinnable debate about subjective personal taste. I swear it’s more of an abusive relationship rather than thinking that it tastes good. I hate coffee’s flavor, but when I go without coffee for a day, I miss its acidic and bitter taste

It’s definitely an acquired taste for most people, I hated coffee but drank it for the caffeine boost many years ago. Now, give me a shot of espresso and I’ll judge that thing like I’m a coffee nazi! I love the taste of straight espresso providing its made correctly, pour times are perfect on the machine and the beans are of good quality.
