In 1978 I went to this show as a total Sabbath fan. This somewhat unknown (to me anyway) group Van Halen warmed up. I left that show thinking Sabbath was crap (and they were, it was the Never Say Die! Tour) and blown away by Eddie. Eruption changed what I thought guitar plying was all about. RIP man.

My dad met Eddie Van Halen back in the 80s and used to tell me the story about how he came to his house one time. He said Eddie had a wacky and wonderful attitude, super upbeat and he tells my dad “hey I want to show you something”. He takes my dad around back to his recording studio and plays some him some background instrumentals of a new song.
