I was heavily involved in the youth group as a teen. The pastor of our church has a son that was two years older than me. When we were sophomores and his son was a senior, my best friend started dating the pastor’s son. Suddenly the entirety of our church leadership and even a good portion of the congregation felt like my best friends’ sex life was their business. Everyone was talking about them and putting their two cents in about their relationship. Our youth leaders were constantly speaking to my best friend and her boyfriend about boundaries and purity

It was pretty uncomfortable for her and as an adult now I see how inappropriate it was. It was like the whole church was making sure she wasn’t tempting the pastor’s son or leading him off the path. And would you believe it, his son was the one pressuring her to go further and pushing her limits?! It was a really big factor in me turning away from religion completely. Yeah, it’s horrifying. And seriously screwed up my perception of sex/self-worth for a long time. Anyone else has the “chewing gum” analogy taught to them?
