As mentioned above, I believe that the main issue with the Pokémon franchise started with Gen 6(X&Y) and only got worse/more apparent from there. Gen 6 had a lot of issues, balancing, low new pokemon, awful story, laughable antagonists, bad rivals, bad gyms/leaders, awful performance, and no post-game, but a lot of it was largely waived away by the fanbase due to it being the first 3D pokemon games. Gen 6 did however make a few great improvements/additions. Mega Evolutions were really great as a concept and added a much-needed layer of strategy to team planning and comp. battles. The PSS is the best multi-player system ever in a Pokémon game(and even most Nintendo titles). And some side additions like the Battle Chateau(made leveling comp teams a breeze) and Hoard battles(great for EV training) made life much easier.

All the issues from Gen 6 however carried over to Gen 7, with a lot of great things(like the PSS) not making it over. This time, however, on top of many of Gen 6s issues, Gen 7 had many of its own. The main criticism of these games is the unprecedented level of hand-holding throughout the entire game, leading all the way to the E4 and Champion. Every five steps would trigger some character interaction that would pull you away to some little thing and drop a ton of exposition on the said thing. Compound by the growing issue of Route design becoming more and more linear, made Gen 7 feel VERY restricted and lose a lot of the “Grand Adventure” feeling of past games.
