I saw another discussion on Reddit earlier today where this character was brought up and everyone was talking about Tom Cruise’s acting ability’s kind of a retarded take though. Cruise had serious acting clout for 20 years before Tropic Thunder. I don’t see how someone can see Eyes Wide Shut and then Tropic Thunder and say ‘wow, I didn’t realize he was a crazy good actor that would have great range until I saw tropic thunder!’

This is probably the greatest performance of all time. What made it even better is, if I recall correctly, is that he wasn’t in any of the trailers/promo materials. You knew you had the big guns of Jack Black, Ben stiller, and Downey Jr in it, and then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, comes Tom Cruise with fat hands and totally steals the show.
