This is the comment I was looking for. I got halfway through an electrical engineering degree before switching to computer science and I could’ve sworn a typical battery that size wouldn’t have enough voltage to run any significant current through a human body.

Now I feel reassured that a car battery isn’t going to kill you. Unless you hook it up to a transformer to crank up the voltage. (Edit: I’ve been corrected – a transformer won’t do this, but there are DC voltage converters that will). I did once make the mistake of being careless around an ignition coil and got a nasty jolt.
