So having a resource officer there allows them to break up fights without facing the same legal threats. Also, after columbine people are afraid of their kids being murdered at school so having an armed officer there is a comfort as a deterrent to shooters.

I’m not in the US, we also don’t have the ability to interfere in fights. But we also don’t have police/security officers around to try and prevent them either.
